Stage I – Examining the Life of a Candidate for Sainthood

Phase 1: Diocesan or Eparchial Administration Before a cause of action can be filed, five years must have passed after the death of the candidate. This is to provide better balance and objectivity in judging the issue and to let the emotions of the moment evaporate. The pope can dispense from this waiting time.
