Who Is the Patron Saint of Lawyers?

These days, nearly every profession and object has a patron saint who is revered worldwide. For example, a Spanish scholar who lived around 560 years ago is today known as the Patron Saint of the World Wide Web. In addition, did you know that the Patron Saint of Unattractive People is also the patron saint of the mentally sick as well as the owners of livestock, sheep, and coffee shops? As a result, it should come as no surprise that attorneys, law students, and everyone else involved in the legal profession each have their own patron saint.

St.

He is also known as the Patron Saint of Brittany (a region in western France) and the Patron Saint of orphans and abandoned children.

In 1267, he enrolled at the University of Paris, where he received his bachelor’s degree in civil law.

Despite his family’s wealth, Ivo maintained an ascetic lifestyle while providing assistance to the ill, widowed, impoverished, and orphans in his community.

He died as a result of natural causes.

Other Patron Saint of Lawyers

Aside from St. Ivo, there are a slew of other patron saints that are associated with the legal profession. Here are only a few examples.

Saint Catherine of Alexandra

Saint Catherine, who was born a princess to the governor of Alexandria in the Roman province of Egypt, dedicated her life to learning from an early age. She was encouraged to become a Christian after seeing a glimpse of Mary and Jesus in her dreams. Her intervention was necessary when the Roman Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians. She went to him and expressed her displeasure with his harshness. Even though it meant her immediate death, Catherine was claimed to have argued so persuasively that she persuaded the emperor’s greatest pagan thinkers and orators to fight and contradict her Christian ideas, even though it meant their immediate death.

They were all martyred, and she was subsequently sentenced to death by beheading as a result.

Saint Genesius of Rome

Saint Catherine, who was born a princess to the governor of Alexandria in Roman-province Egypt, committed her life to learning from an early age, even before she could read. She was persuaded to become a Christian after experiencing a vision of Mary and Jesus. Her intervention was necessary when the Roman Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians. She went to him and expressed her displeasure with his actions. Even though it meant her imminent death, Catherine was claimed to have argued so persuasively that she persuaded the emperor’s top pagan thinkers and orators to fight and contradict her Christian ideas, despite the fact that it meant their own deaths.

Their martyrdom culminated in her execution by beheading, which she endured for the remainder of her days on earth. She is also the patroness of unmarried females, apologists, jurists, and students, among many other causes.

Saint Thomas More

Saint Thomas, who is better known in history as Sir Thomas More, Lord High Chancellor to King Henry VIII, and author of Utopia, was also a lawyer in his own right, as did his father. Thomas was a devout Catholic who pursued his faith to the point that he pondered becoming a monk. However, he married and elected to remain a layman since he believed he could better serve people as a lawyer. His good reputation helped him to ascend through the ranks of English politics, eventually becoming Henry VIII’s secretary and personal advisor, and subsequently, Lord Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Later, he refused to recognize the ecclesiastical legitimacy of Henry VIII’s marriage and was sentenced to death for his actions.

You’d be astonished at how much good can come from a little faith.

St. Yves, Patron Saint of Lawyers

Wendy S. Loquasto of FoxLoquasto, LLC in Tallahassee contributed to this article. I flew to Italy last year, just before the Coronavirus Pandemic forced us to cancel our plans. If you’ve ever been to Italy, you’re probably aware that visiting the great old cathedrals with all of their fabulous art in situ is a popular tourist attraction. Taking in all of the statues and little chapels in the cathedrals encouraged me to conduct a little research on the saints I was seeing. As you may be aware, there are patron saints for a wide variety of causes.

  1. In my research, I learned that there are at least two of them: St.
  2. Thomas More).
  3. Catherine of Alexandria is also revered as a patron saint of attorneys, owing to her ability to communicate effectively.
  4. Yves.
  5. Yves was a theologian who also studied civil and ecclesiastical law.
  6. He worked as a “advocate” (lawyer) and a judge, and he also trained to be a priest after that.

It was published in the Fordham Law Review in 1932 that provided a wonderful history of his life and miracles, which demonstrates that in addition to taking cases for the poor, widows, orphans, and other distressed persons (as we do today for pro bono work), Yves also took cases for the sick, the elderly, and the infirm.

  1. Despite the fact that I will provide a few snippets from Professor Wigmore’s work below, I strongly encourage you to read the full piece for yourself.
  2. Yves’ profession includes handling appeals.
  3. Professor Wigmore cites this well-known example of St.
  4. He came home one day to find his widowed landlady in tears.
  5. It seems that two of them, Doe and Roe, who were staying with her, had placed a casket of treasures in her care while they went about their business, with the stern instruction that she was only to hand it back to them if the two of them came together and demanded it.
  6. The casket had been handed to Doe by a woman who had believed him in good faith.
  7. And if she was forced to pay for those treasures, she would be bankrupt.

The plaintiff has failed to establish his case.

However, in this instance, just one of them is making the demand.

Allow the plaintiff to produce his co-defendant!” The judge swiftly granted his plea.

In response to his suffering, the judge ordered him to be detained and questioned; the other merchant was also tracked down and hauled into the courtroom; and the casket was retrieved, only to be discovered to be empty of anything but old rubbish when opened.

As a result, the young lawyer saved the widow from financial catastrophe.] When he served as a judge, it was reported that the integrity of his character enabled him to provide just decisions to both rich and poor people alike.

He cut short the lengthy responses of chatty witnesses and instructed attorneys to condense pleadings that were excessively long and to get down to the topic at hand.

He also had success in civil cases, where his great dedication to duty and fearlessness in administering justice, regardless of the persons impacted, resulted in judgements against the powerful, including personal friends, and cemented his reputation as an able and just judge.

The first is that the person be a saint.

Wigmore provided this story of one of St.

She rushed to the tomb of Ivo, where she cried out for aid and appealed to him for guidance.

There were three of them.

Nevertheless, the justice of Ivo from Heaven was on his trail, as he was hit with blindness while sitting comfortably in his shelter.

Another miracle followed as the penitent thief was restored to sight almost immediately after his confession.

Yves with this prayer: [My lord Saint Ives of Truth,Who knows the pro and con, Place right where it must be,And the fault with him who is wrong.

Yves, “He continues to be the voice of justice, which is ordained to reconciliation and peace in order to create new relations among individuals and communities and to build a more impartial society.” * * *The values proposed by St.

Because of his concern for the promotion of fair justice and the defense of the human rights of the poorest people, he has called on the architects of Europe today to make every effort to guarantee that the rights of all people, particularly the weakest, are recognized and protected.

Marywood University History: Saint Ives

St. Ives was known as the “Ideal of the Legal Profession” and the “Patron Saint of Attorneys” because of his dedication to the legal profession. In the murals, he is shown as the law. He possessed a worldwide sense of justice, law, and peace in his heart and in his soul. The radiance of such a spirit is unconstrained by the boundaries established by man. St. Ives was born on October 17th, 1253, in Kermartin, Brittany, and died on May 19th, 1303, in Louannec, France. He was the patron saint of the city of Louannec.

  • He was a lawyer in Rennes and Treguier before becoming a member of the Franciscan Tertiary Order.
  • He earned the titles of advocate for the poor and patron of the poor because of his remarkable energy and integrity in the performance of his responsibilities, as well as his enormous kindness.
  • Treguier is the location of his relics.
  • Even youngsters and their seniors are unafraid to approach their compassionate benefactor, who is revealed to be a doctor of laws.
  • He is just, polished, and dynamic, with a nice spatial distribution, a scenic vein, and a tranquil medieval environment in the backdrop, all of which combine to create a compelling character.

Sir Thomas More

Thomas More is widely regarded as a man of extraordinary integrity, and he has since been recognized as a martyr and canonized as a saint by Catholic authorities. Sir Thomas More was born in the British capital of London. His father, John More, was a lawyer and a judge, and his mother, Agnes Graunger, had a significant effect on the young Thomas More. He was a very religious man of prayer, a philosopher, and a skilled lawyer who rose to the position of politician as a result of his efforts. With Utopia, Sir Thomas More created a book that was first published in 1516, and in which he described the political structure of an imagined island kingdom.

Sir Thomas More was a kind father who frequently sent letters to his children when he was abroad on business.

His daughters were well-known in the community for their academic achievements.

Sir Thomas More was tried and convicted of treason because he refused to take the Oath of Supremacy.

Sir Thomas More was imprisoned in the Tower of London when he refused to recite the Oath of Succession in the presence of the King. When he first landed in the tower, he penned a letter to his eldest daughter, Margaret Roper, which has since become renowned. He was decapitated the next day.

Sir Thomas More, A Defender of Natural Law and Religious Liberty

Every year, on the 22nd of June, the Thomas More Society commemorates the life of our namesake, Sir Thomas More, in honor of his feast day. Justice, statesmen, and politicians are all patronized by Sir Thomas More, the patron saint of lawyers. A man of great spiritual beliefs, Sir Thomas More had spent time in prayer with the Carthusian monks who resided nearby in the local monastery, and he had a strong sense of justice. It was at this period of prayer and reflection that Sir Thomas More prepared himself for the obstacles that he would confront later in his professional life.

  1. It was during this time period that King Henry VIII expressed a wish to separate from the Catholic church and establish his own church.
  2. Sir Thomas More was asked to provide his approval to King Henry VIII’s wish to designate himself as head of the Church of England, which he did.
  3. His ultimate objective was to be able to officially divorce his legitimate wife, Catherine, and marry another woman, Anne Boleyn, in order to do this.
  4. What Sir Thomas More did not anticipate was the duplicity and betrayal of those who desired power at his expense, which resulted in his death.
  5. Sir Thomas More was not willing to forsake his moral principles.
  6. Especially in this day and age, Saint Thomas More serves as an inspiring role model for pro-life advocates and those entrusted to protect them, such as the Thomas More Societyattorneys, via his calm and steadfast dedication to beliefs.

A Message from our Founder and President

The Thomas More Society was founded by Thomas Brejcha, who served as its president and chief counsel. As I work with You, Saint Thomas More, I pray that I may be trustworthy with confidences, keen in study, accurate in analysis, correct in conclusion, able in argumentation, loyal to clients, honest with all, courteous to adversaries, and always alert to my own conscience, all for the glory of God and the pursuit of His justice. Come sit with me at my desk and listen to the stories of my clients with me.

Make a prayer for me, and with me, that my family would find in me what Your family found in You: friendship and courage, cheerfulness and charitable giving, diligence in responsibilities, advice in adversity, patience in suffering—their good servant, but first and foremost God’s servant.

“The Arrest and Execution of Sir Thomas More in 1535,” written by Antoine Caron, is a historical novel.

“What good does it do to know that there is a God, whom you not only believe in by faith, but also know by reason? What good does it do to know Him if you have a low opinion of Him?” says the philosopher.

Give Me the Grace, Good Lord

Please, Good Lord, grant me the ability to bring the entire planet to a grinding halt. To fix one’s gaze firmly on You rather than on the words that come out of other people’s lips. – To be comfortable with one’s alone existence. It is not necessary to yearn for worldly pleasures. I’m working on removing myself completely from the world and clearing my thoughts of all its concerns one step at a time. – I don’t want to hear about earthly matters, yet I’m worried that hearing about worldly fantasies would make me feel uncomfortable.

  1. It is necessary to lean on God’s comfort.
  2. – It is necessary for me to recognize my own vileness and wretchedness.
  3. In order to purify myself of my sins, I must patiently endure misfortune in order to achieve that purification.
  4. To be cheerful in the face of adversity.
  5. – To keep the last item in mind as a final farewell.
  6. To make death no longer be a foreign concept to me.
  7. To ask for forgiveness before to the arrival of the judge.

To express gratitude to God for His blessings on an ongoing basis.

To refrain from engaging in pointless discourse.

In order to avoid unwanted recreations.

– Because the brethren of Joseph could never have done him as much good with their love and favor as they did him with their hate and hatred, it is appropriate to consider my greatest foes to be my closest friends.

Amen.

St. Mark was probably born John Mark, in the Holy Land, in the First Century AD.Mark was the cousin of Barnabas.Mark was an early follower of Jesus. He was one of the 70 apostles sent out by Jesus to spread the faith in Palestine and beyond. However, Mark’s faith was tested when Jesus proclaimed that His flesh was “real food” and His blood was “real drink”. St. Peter restored his faith in Jesus.Mark became the companion of St. Peter and travelled with him widely.Mark acted as Peter’s interpreter. It is believed that at this time Mark began collecting information from Peter; this he would later use in writing his Gospel.Later, Mark accompanied Sts. Paul and Barnabas on their journeys, bringing the Word of God to people.Mark was ordered by St. Peter to go to Alexandria and spread the Word of God. He became the first Bishop of Alexandria. The Christian community that Mark founded was very important in the history of early Christianity. Because of this, Mark is often honored as the founder of Christianity in Africa. Many Christians believed that while he lived in Alexandria he wrote down the Gospel. St. Mark never claimed to have been the author of the Gospel, however, his authorship of the Gospel is confirmed by early Christians. After many years ministering to his flock, St. Mark died in Alexandria. According to the Coptic Church, he was martyred in 68 AD. While celebrating Easter, he was attacked by a pagan mob, who after dragging him from his church, lynched him. Before he died, Jesus appeared to him, comforting him: “Peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist!”St. Mark performed many miracles during his time as bishop of Alexandria. Once, he made a Christian slave invulnerable to blows as he was about to be martyred by pagans. The Christian community kept the body of Mark, and his tomb became a shrine. In 828, relics believed to be the body of St. Mark were stolen from Alexandria, which had been conquered by the Muslims two centuries earlier. Two Venetian traders, with the help of two Greek monks, disinterred the saint’s body and took it to Venice. The Venetian merchants believed that St. Mark guided them to the relics because he did not want his remains to lay in a city that had been conquered by the Muslims. Today, St. Mark’s remains lay in St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.St. Mark was a transmitter of the Words of Jesus, and many of the best known teachings of Jesus are only known through his Gospel. For example, Mark 8:36 proclaims: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”Likewise, Mark 10:4 states: “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for such is the kingdom of God.”St. Mark’s Gospel has been immensely influential in Christianity, and continues to teach and inspire Christians to this day.

THE PATRON SAINT OF LAWYERS

It was Saint Thomas More, the Patron Saint of Lawyers, who was commemorated on February 7th in the Catholic calendar. He was born on the 7th of February in 1478 in London, England, and is possibly the most well-known of all the English saints. It was clear from an early age that he had a sharp mind, a quick wit, and a strong commitment to the truth. His insatiable intellectual curiosity led him to pursue a legal education at New Inn (Inns of Court) in London, where he was recognized for his scholastic competence and honesty.

It was enacted the Act of Supremacy when King Henry VIII wished to divorce his wife Katherine of Aragon since she was unable to have children.

In response to his refusal to sign the Act of Supremacy and therefore compromise his conscience and the church, Thomas resigned.

The King would continue to attempt to persuade Thomas to sing the Act, but Thomas would refuse.

He was later tried and convicted of High Treason.

Thomas was executed on July 6, 1535, when he was still holding fast to his beliefs in the irreconcilability of marriage and the sovereignty of the Roman Catholic Church.

Prayer to St.

Take part in my library reading sessions with me and remain by my side at all times so that today I do not sacrifice my soul in order to gain a point.

Pray that my family may find in me what yours found in you: friendship and courage, cheerfulness and charity, diligence in duties, counsel in adversity, patience in pain—their good servant, and God’s first.”
