Land

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an oval-shaped island that is 23 miles (37 kilometers) long and 5 miles (8 kilometers) broad, with an area of 68 square miles (176 square km). A volcanic mountainous ridge that runs along the center of the island forms a semicircle around a plain in the southeast corner of the island. The highest peak in the country is Mount Liamuiga (originally Mount Misery), which has a lake in its wooded crater (3,792 feet). With the exception of the highlands, the soil is light and permeable.

  1. The island is well-watered and fertile, with warm summers and slightly milder winters, making it a desirable destination for agriculture.
  2. A total of 55 inches (1,397 mm) of precipitation falls each year, with the rainy season lasting from May through November.

People

The majority of the population is black, with a tiny mulatto (of mixed African and white ancestry) minority present. In addition, there are relatively minor South Asian and European communities. Rural areas are home to more than two-thirds of the country’s population. The official language of the country is English. Religious denominations with the largest populations are Anglican and Methodist, with a tiny number of Roman Catholics. Both Saint Kitts and Nevis have historically had significant levels of emigration, which has helped to counteract natural population growth and allow the islands to maintain a relatively steady population.

Economy

The growing of sugarcane, which was once a nationalized sector and the economic backbone of Saint Kitts and Nevis, was phased out in 2005 due to a drop in demand in international markets. Tourism has surpassed it in importance as the most significant economic industry. Vegetables and fruits, mostly coconuts, are among the crops that are presently being grown. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank is in charge of the country’s monetary affairs, and the Eastern Caribbean dollar is the official currency of the country.

Electronic equipment, batik-dyed textiles, as well as other apparel and furnishings, are among the products.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Trinidad & Tobago are the country’s primary export and import markets.

Government and society

Since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1983, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has operated as an autonomous member of the Commonwealth, with the British monarch serving as the country’s chief executive. The crown is represented by a governor-general who is selected by the monarch. The prime minister, who serves as the head of government together with other cabinet members, is elected by the people of the country. The monarch and the National Assembly combine to form the parliament, which has certain members who are selected by the king.

Nevis is a British overseas territory.

Education is mandatory for all students from the ages of 5 to 16, and it is offered via a nationwide system of free public schools as well as private church-affiliated institutions, according to the constitution.

There are various hospitals and a large number of health centers spread around the islands. Tropical illnesses have been almost eradicated in recent years. The capital, Basseterre, serves as the focal point for the majority of the state’s cultural activities.

Riding Through History

Despite the fact that “Kitts” is the island’s nickname and the most generally used appellation today, the island was initially dubbed St. Christopher by the legendary explorer Christopher Columbus himself when he visited the island in 1492 during his second journey to the New World. Upon the island’s colonization by Britain in the 1600s, sugar quickly rose to become the island’s primary export, where it stayed for hundreds of years until it was surpassed by tourism in the early 2000s. Much of the sugar industry infrastructure, including the one-of-a-kind sugar mill, is still available for visitors to explore today.

Despite the fact that St. Kitts and Nevis is the smallest country in the Caribbean, the country nonetheless has two lovely golf courses with plenty of space to practice your swing. The Robert Trent Jones course at the Four Seasons Resort on Nevis is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the Caribbean, and it provides a golfing sanctuary unlike any other on the island’s mainland, stretching from the foothills of Nevis Peak all the way to the 18th hole on the seashore. The course’s undulating fairways are lined with brilliant and colorful tropical vegetation, and if you look closely, you might even catch a glimpse of the lively green vervet monkeys that inhabit the islands as you make your way around the course’s nine holes.

The public transit system on the island is comprised of microbuses. These are far less expensive than taxis and may be hailed down while on the road. Upon reaching capacity, the driver will flash their lights and go on their way. The majority of the time, service does not extend to Frigate Bay or the Southern Peninsula. Taxis are responsible for this service. In terms of the Micro bus format, taxis and buses are virtually identical; the only distinction is that taxis have a yellow license plate that begins with the letter T and buses have a green license plate that begins with the letter H.

Talk

English is the official language of Saint Kitts and Nevis. In contrast, if you have never been to the Caribbean before, you may have difficulties understanding the patois, or more accurately the Creole language, that is spoken by the natives, which is based on the English language but sounds nothing like it to the untrained ear because it is derived from it. For example, “a-come” indicates that someone is approaching and “a-knock” indicates that someone is knocking. In addition to African languages (west, central, and Nigerian), the Caribbean patois has origins in normal English, Scottish, and Spanish dialects as well as Scottish Gaelic.

See

Of course, with a land area of only 261 kilometers squared, Saint Kitts and Nevis offers a rather restricted (but not non-existent!) selection of usual tourist attractions. It is, however, rarely a deterrent for tourists to these two little islands, which boast all of the wonderful natural beauty that the Caribbean has to offer. Because of its strategic location, Saint Kitts and Nevis became a colonial hotspot and a focal point in the war for control of the West Indies islands between European powers.

  • The remains of the various plantations, as well as the celebrations, crafts, and other representations of that culture, are today among the most popular tourist sites on the islands.
  • Nothing, however, brings the history of the island more vividly to life than the spectacular and well-preserved ruins of the Brimstone Hill Fortification.
  • There are just a few remnants and a few canons left of Fort Charleson Nevis, which served as the defences for the settlement of Charlestown.
  • George’s Anglican Church and Independence Square, which was formerly the location of a slave auction.
  • Stunning scenery can be found across the islands, with panoramic vistas of lush green hills covered in rain forest, secluded beaches, and of course, the clear blue sea.

Mt. Liamuiga, a dormant volcano on St. Kitts and Nevis and the highest point on the islands, is particularly popular and worthwhile because of the spectacular views that can be had from the summit.

Diving

Saint Kitts and Nevis, with a land area of only 261km2, offers a restricted (but not non-existent!) selection of usual tourist attractions. While the lack of infrastructure is a disadvantage for tourists to these two little islands, the natural beauty of the Caribbean makes up for it. Because of its strategic location, Saint Kitts and Nevis became a colonial hotspot as well as a focal point in the war for control of the West Indies islands between European countries. The colonial settlers established sugar plantations at a quick pace and acquired African slaves, providing the groundwork for the islands’ vibrant cultural heritage today.

The beach itself is modest, with only one sandy section and the remainder consisting primarily of small boulders and pebbles. Costs

Contrary to the popular belief that all Caribbean countries are prohibitively costly, costs in Nevis are rather affordable. The cost of fuel is high since it must be imported, but because the island is small, you won’t be consuming that much of it anyhow. Many ordinary items may be purchased at a fair price, and depending on where you go, eating out is within reach of the majority of people. Despite the fact that fresh food is restricted in variety by American and British standards, it is still fairly priced.

Work

Several cruise ship lines offer a Mount Liamuiga hiking tour, which includes some climbing, at times demanding the use of hand tools to scale the rocky terrain. To get to the last viewing point, you must take a rope and lift yourself onto a rock ledge, then climb over several enormous fallen trees to get there. The trails are not signed, but the path is clear enough to be followed without assistance. At critical forks in the trail, tree trunks have been spray painted orange to serve as trail markers.

After a storm, the route can get muddy; there is little protection from the elements, and there are no restrooms.

The trek to the rim is 4.6 miles round trip and may be accomplished in less than 3 hours depending on fitness level (elevation gain is 2,143, feet).

Stay healthy

When visiting the city and other public locations (such as the airport, downtown, and stores), it is critical to ensure that you are wearing shoes and a shirt. It is considered disrespectful to be dressed in beach clothing in a metropolitan setting. Swearing in public is likewise frowned upon, and you may be penalized if you do it too frequently.

Islands of volcanic origin, with enormous central peaks covered in rainforest; the steep slopes going up to these peaks are mainly uninhabited; the islands are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. In both islands, there are several rivers that flow down from the highlands, supplying fresh water to the local inhabitants. St. Kitts and Nevis also contains a single, extremely tiny lake.

Economy

Ponds of Salt With a view of Mount Nevis Saint Kitts and Nevis was home to the last remaining sugar plantation in the Eastern Caribbean. Aiming to diversify the agricultural sector and stimulate the development of other sectors of the economy, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis launched a program in response to the country’s declining sugar industry’s inability to make a profit. The sugar industry in St. Kitts and Nevis was ultimately closed down by the government in mid-2005, following years of losses and a deteriorating financial situation.
