PORT ST LUCIE FLORIDA HISTORY

As a native Floridian, I have fond recollections of the rural road that ran between Fort Pierce and Stuart, which was designated as US-1. When I was growing up in the 1960s, I don’t recall seeing a single traffic signal along the route. Along the 18-mile length of roadway, there were a few fruit and food booths, as well as a shell store selling souvenirs. The enormous shell in front of the store served as a beacon in the neighborhood. Ranches and woods undeveloped areas made up the majority of the rural environs.

THEN RIVER PARK CAME TO PORT ST. LUCIE

Gardener Cowles was the owner and publisher of Look from 1937 to 1971, which was a popular American magazine during that time period. Jack Benny and Rochester are featured on the cover of Look magazine in 1950. Cowles and his investors purchased large tracts of land between Fort Pierce and Stuart in the early 1950s, and in 1953 they filed a plat for a new subdivision known as River Park in the area. He and his team launched a nationwide advertising campaign that was both effective and cost-effective.

  1. His target audience consisted of people who were nearing the end of their working lives.
  2. The structure was completed in 1959.
  3. When it came to getting food and other necessities, they had to go either north to the nearest shopping complex in Fort Pierce or south to Stuart.
