Paris Saint-Germain FC (PSG) history, facts and records
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are a relatively young club when compared to the majority of other footballing superpowers. Despite this, they were extraordinarily successful during their brief existence, winning the Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, and the League Cup thrice. They are one of just two French teams to have won a European trophy, a feat they did in 1996 when they won the Cup Winners’ Cup in the Netherlands. In French football, their rivalry with Marseille, which is referred to as “Le Classique,” is largely regarded as the most heated derby in the country.

History
The city of Paris lacked a great football team for a lengthy period of time, and this was especially true in football. In 1970, a group of businessmen carried out their plan to merge Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain into a single club known as Paris Saint-Germain, and the club was officially established. ) (However, the year of the club’s founding is somewhat debatable, given that it became affiliated with the Fédération française de football in December 1969.) As expected, PSG instantly gained the support of the Parisian public, who was overjoyed at the prospect of finally having a team capable of competing for local honors and trophies.
Winning the first major trophies
PSG won their first major trophy in the early 1980s when they won back-to-back French Cups in 1982 and 1983, marking the club’s first big triumph. After winning their first Ligue 1 championship in 1986, the club decided to try their luck in European tournaments. They played a lot of memorable matches, but were eventually unsuccessful in advancing past the quarter-final stage.
In this era, PSG established a preference for attacking-minded football, which would later play a significant role in the club’s rise to popularity among fans both in France and beyond.
Larger investments leading to international success
Following the club’s acquisition by Canal+ in 1991, the club’s future seemed set to be one of grandeur. With the new owners pouring enormous quantities of money into high-profile acquisitions such as George Weah and Raul Jimenez, Paris Saint-Germain soon rose to become one of the most powerful clubs in the nation. Among other achievements, PSG won their second Ligue 1 title in 1994, three French Cups (1993, 1995, 1998), and two League Cups (1995 and 1998), and became the second French club to win a European trophy when they defeated Rapid Wien in the 1996 Cup Winners’ Cup final.
Decline
These glorious years were quickly replaced with one of decline, which was brought on by bad mismanagement and cracking under strain during championship races. In spite of the club’s Cup success in the 2000s – including three French Cups and a League Cup title – this decade is best recognized for the multiple crisis situations and difficulties with hooliganism that occurred during this time period.
New owner
After being purchased by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, the club’s fortunes began to change for the better. PSG re-entered the spotlight in 2013 when they won three straight Ligue 1 titles, led by new star Zlatan Ibrahimovi. Since then, they have continued to thrive. They further added to their trophy cabinet by winning a second French Cup in 2015, as well as two additional League Cups in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In 2017, when the Brazilian sensation Neymar was purchased from Barcelona for a record-breaking €222 million, a new world transfer record was established.
Logo
Paris Saint-logo Germain’s incorporates a stylised representation of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower has been a component of the French national crest since 1972, however the design has undergone several minor revisions (in the years 1992-1996, it was left out completely from the logo). A tiny fleur de lys emblem may be seen below the Eiffel Tower symbol, to the right of the tower.
Paris Saint-Germain FC timeline

The Paris Football Club (FC), which would eventually join with Stade Saint-Germain to form PSG, is founded in 1969. The club is officially created in 1970. PSG and Paris FC parted ways in 1972. Where Would PSG Finish in the Premier League?
Paris Saint-Germain, who are currently in first place in Ligue 1 and have been in good form in the Champions League, are one of Europe’s most remarkable teams right now. The complaint leveled against Le Championnat, on the other hand, is that it is not competitive enough—which is untrue, considering the fact that six different champions have emerged in the previous six seasons—and that PSG are not sufficiently tested in the domestic league. With the readmission of AS Monaco to France’s top division following their promotion from Ligue 2, it already appears as though things are changing.
- Consider the scenario in if the French champions were permitted admittance into the English Premier League, if only in imagination.
- With the recent additions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, and Edinson Cavani, who have all been selected to the tentative 23-man list for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or by ESPN FC, the English Premier League would likely elevate its present standing.
- It is a thought-provoking concept.
- There is quality all over the pitch, and the French giants boast one of the greatest starting XIs in the world, according to the stats.
- Indisputable evidence exists that this current squad is by far and away the best the capital club has fielded since Qatar Sports Investments took over as majority shareholder in 2011.
- Given that the club was founded just in 1970, PSG has gone a long way in a short period of time and is now on par with some of the most powerful clubs in the Premier League.
- Newcastle United may have a monopoly on the majority of the EPL’s French talent, but a handful of former Paris Saint-Germain players are now located in England.
The transaction was completed at the conclusion of the transfer window.
Both players have played for Paris Saint-Germain in the past, with Diego Lugano and Stephane Sessegnon, while Everton’s Sylvain Distin spent two seasons in the French capital.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Is there anything else that can be said about this man that hasn’t already been said?
/Photo courtesy of Getty Images Thiago Silva (Thiago Silva): Despite the fact that he has had a difficult season due to injuries, Brazilian captain Thiago Silva is largely considered as the finest defender in the world.
His €45million transfer cost was justified by his contributions to PSG’s run.
Despite the fact that he has yet to gel with striking partner Ibrahimovic, El Matador has nevertheless managed to score seven goals in as many league appearances this season, proving that he is one of the world’s most clinical footballers in the process.
He has a lengthy future ahead of him at the top of the European game, even at the age of 26.
He has the potential to become a world-class player in the years to come.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen: Paris Saint-Germain paid a princely sum of €35million on the 19-year-old Brazilian this summer, signaling the end of Sakho’s 12-year affiliation with the club.
Photograph courtesy of The Coach/Getty Images It is no surprise that Laurent Blanc is familiar with the English Premier League, having previously participated in the tournament.
Blanc has won a league and league cup double with the Girondins de Bordeaux since making the transition to coaching in 2009.
The positive start that PSG has had this season has gone a long way toward healing the harm that has been done to his reputation unfairly.
Lastly, thanks to Getty Images.
Their starting XI is considered to be one of the greatest in Europe, and there is no question that the French champions are capable of competing with the best in the English Premier League.
If Blanc’s team is drawn against a Premier League opponent in this year’s campaign, and presuming they advance from their group, that situation might very well alter.
The squad may be taken aback by the type of football, but it is nothing that their level of skill could not rapidly adjust to in a short period of time.
Given their current position in relation to other teams in the Premier League, it is impossible to envisage them being anything other than a serious contender for the championship. Prediction: The top three.

Photographs courtesy of Getty Images This is a humiliating setback for the planned European Super League’s organizers, who have failed to include Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Robert Lewandowski, Europe’s greatest striker, as well as superstars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, would be absent from the match.
In light of all of this, Joel Glazer, co-chairman of Manchester United and vice-chairman of the Super League, made a statement last night that the new competition brought “together the world’s greatest clubs and players to compete against each other throughout the season.” The statement came across as somewhat hollow.
That tells you a lot about the European Super League, mainly that it is not about greed, but rather about taking risks.
In addition, before heaping excessive praise on Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, it’s important to understand why they would like things the way they are, and whether or not it is a completely desirable state of affairs.
Why Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich aren’t in the Super League

AFP photo courtesy of Getty Images On the surface, it’s hard to see why Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, who play in two of Europe’s worst leagues, wouldn’t want to quit their respective local championships for something more profitable.
- Since failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time 10 years ago, Paris Saint-Germain has only been defeated once in the domestic championship.
- Financially, the two clubs are so far ahead of their nearest opponents that it is doubtful that their supremacy will be challenged.
- Compare this to the Premier League teams that are vying for a spot in the Super League.
- Even Chelsea’s Champions League status is in doubt.
- Even Manchester City, who have dominated the Premier League for the previous 10 years, came dangerously close to being relegated to the Europa League in 2015/16.
Big games mean big bucks

- If there is more time, an additional 40 photos may be used.
- The usage of social media during the match is limited to 120 photographs.
- There is no use for this in betting publications, games, or single club/league/player periodicals.
- However, when it comes to generating income, this is not the strategy that is most effective.
- The reason Chelsea can play in a stadium that is roughly half the size of Arsenal while earning nearly the same amount of money from its fans is because the club is competing in the Champions League.
- Premier League teams are well aware that commercial money is fast becoming the most important source of revenue, and that in order to make enough of it, they must play a specific amount of high-profile games.
- Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, benefit from the present format.
They may virtually guarantee their partners domestic success as well as a specific number of Champions League games in exchange for their cooperation. Why would they want to upset a system that is already skewed in their favor?
PSG match schedule: No Lionel Messi vs. Bordeaux in final match before November break
(Sporting News)w=500 quality=80 w=500 quality=80 Paris Saint-Germain will go into the November international break for World Cup qualifiers in first place in Ligue 1 and second place in Group A of the UEFA Champions League. The French champions are also in first place in the UEFA Europa League. With Lionel Messi out with an injury and the squad struggling to find its best form as it adjusts to its new-look lineup, the best-case scenario is that the club finishes second. Paris Saint-Germain will travel to Bordeaux on Saturday to play in the club’s 13th Ligue 1 game out of 38 this season.
- Barcelona star Lionel Messi will miss the encounter due to knee and hamstring injuries, which forced him to miss the team’s previous Champions League play against RB Leipzig.
- 20 in the last match of the season.
