Diaeresis is indicated by the placement of two dots ( ) above a vowel, which is represented by the symbol. In a word like mas(corn), the diaeresis is quite clear: the combination of a and I would produce a è sound, but the diaeresis is there to avoid this combination: mah – eess To be quite honest, as a native French speaker, I would argue that the name Saint-Saens is likewise strange to us.

For a very long time, I was completely baffled as to how to pronounce the name of this great composer. I’ve heard two distinct pronunciations from people who should be able to be trusted, and it’s only now that I’ve gotten to the bottom of this riddle. French spelling is approximately as complicated as English spelling, and it is not a very good pointer to pronunciation when it comes to pronunciation. Many English speakers appear to follow the rule of thumb that you should not pronounce the endings of French words, but this is not especially effective, and as a result, they end up with bizarre pronunciations.

  1. For example, the phrases bac, lac, sac, coq, and dotandest(meaningeast) are all spoken in their whole.
  2. The composer Saint-Saens, for example, used his own name without the use of an apostrophe in the beginning of his sentence.
  3. Despite the fact that many French-speaking musicians and intellectuals continue to employ the traditional pronunciation with a s at the end (), the pronunciation with a s is now quite prevalent in French, especially among radio presenters (see below).
  4. As in the case of Madame de Stal, for example, the diaeresis on the e dates back to a time when the e was not silent, but the diaeresis no longer has an impact on how names are pronounced because the e is no longer silent.
  1. See this article (in French) for more information. I’m not really sure how this is supposed to be pronounced. I believe I overheard a French person say that, but I am not certain. I had questioned if that was a non-standard spelling of the word for-eille, but perhaps I was overthinking things! UPDATE: I’ve since discovered a video of her pronouncing her own name, and it is, in fact, correct. Take a look at this video. The name appears immediately at the beginning of the piece. As a result, I overthink things! 3/18
