St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the world’s only facility dedicated exclusively to the research and treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases, was founded on the promise of a single individual. Danny Thomas, then a struggling radio actor with only seven dollars in his pocket, knelt on his knees in a Detroit church before a statue of St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and prayed: “Help me find my place in life, and I will build you a shrine where the poor, the helpless, and the hopeless may come for comfort and assistance.” Despite his desire to become a great artist during the Great Depression, Thomas’s career appeared to be going nowhere.

  1. Just a few days later, Thomas was recruited as the featured comic at the 5100 Club, a well-known Chicago nightclub.
  2. Later in life, Thomas rose to fame as the actor of the famous sitcom Make Room for Daddy and as the producer of other great television series, including The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Andy Griffith Show, among others.
  3. Jude Thaddeus, and he never broke it.
  4. He envisioned a location where the world’s greatest experts would come together to collaborate on the discovery of remedies for the potentially deadly illnesses that affect children.
  5. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and by 1955, Memphis business leaders had joined in with the endeavor.
  6. The pair once traveled to twenty-eight places in thirty-two days due to the busy nature of the schedule.
  7. He thought that Arabic-speaking Americans as a group should express gratitude to the United States for the freedoms granted to their forefathers and foremothers.

The American Lung Association of Memphis (ALSAC), which has its headquarters in Memphis, has acquired complete responsibility for the hospital’s fund-raising activities.

Jude Children’s Research Hospital was established in 1962.

In the period 1962 to 2000, the hospital treated more than sixteen thousand children from all across the United States and from more than sixty different foreign nations.

Prior to the establishment of the facility, less than 4% of children with the most common form of pediatric cancer, acute lymphocytic leukemia, survived their illness.

The awarding of the Nobel Prize for Medicine to Peter Doherty, Ph.D., chairman of the immunology department, was a watershed moment in the hospital’s history.

When bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy became available as therapies for dozens of diseases ranging from leukemia to sickle cell disease in the 1990s, the hospital increased its efforts to pursue these treatments.

Charity Navigator – Rating for ALSAC – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Program Expense Ratio is calculated by dividing Program Expenses by the total amount of expenses (average of most recent three 990s). This metric represents the percentage of a charity’s total costs that is spent on the programs and services that the organization was established to provide. This proportion is calculated by dividing a charity’s average program expenditures by the charity’s average overall functional expenses. We compute the average costs incurred by the charity over the course of its three most recent fiscal years.

Administrative Expenses

According to information provided by charities on their IRS Form 990, this statistic shows the percentage of a charity’s total budget that is spent on overhead, administrative personnel and associated expenditures, and organizational meetings. This percentage is calculated by dividing a charity’s average administrative expenditures by the charity’s average overall functional expenses. We compute the average costs incurred by the charity over the course of its three most recent fiscal years. IRS Form 990 is the source of this information.

Fundraising Expenses

This metric represents the amount of money that a charity spends to raise funds. It is possible that fundraising expenses will include campaign printing and public relations, mailing and personnel, as well as costs associated in collecting gifts from individuals, organizations, and foundations. This proportion is calculated by dividing a charity’s average fundraising expenditures by the charity’s average overall functioning expenses. We compute the average costs incurred by the charity over the course of its three most recent fiscal years.

Liabilities to Assets Ratio

The ratio of total liabilities to total assets is calculated by dividing total liabilities by total assets (most recent 990). One of our objectives in grading the financial performance of charities is to assist contributors in determining the financial capability and long-term viability of a certain organization. Charities, like other organizations in other industries, must be conscious of how they manage their total liabilities in relation to their total assets in order to succeed. This ratio serves as a measure of a company’s solvency and/or long-term viability, depending on the situation.

IRS Form 990 is the source of this information.

Fundraising Efficiency

The amount of money spent in order to raise one dollar in charity contributions. A charity’s fundraising effectiveness is determined by dividing its average fundraising expenditures by the average total donations it gets on a yearly basis. We compute the average costs and average donations for the charity over the course of its three most recent fiscal years. IRS Form 990 is the source of this information.

Working Capital Ratio

This calculation determines how long a charity could continue its current level of expenditure with its net available assets, also known as working capital, as stated on its most recent Form 990. The net assets of a charity that are not restricted or temporarily restricted are included in the operating capital of the organization; however, permanently restricted net assets are not included. The working capital ratio is calculated by dividing a charity’s net accessible assets in the most recent year by the average annual total costs of the organization.

We compute the average total costs incurred by the charity over the course of its three most recent fiscal years. IRS Form 990 is the source of this information.

Program Expense Growth

The following formula is used to calculate the average annual rise in program expenditures on an annual basis: 1 where Y0 represents the charity’s program spending in the first year of the interval under consideration, Yn represents the charity’s program expenses in the most recent year, and n is the number of years that have gone between Y 0 and the most recent year. IRS Form 990 is the source of this information.

Governance

If these governance measures are not in place, Charity Navigator will investigate to see if they are documented on the organization’s Form 990. Among the sources is the IRS Form 990.

Governance:

No Material Diversion of Assets.(More)A diversion of assets – any unauthorized conversion or use of the organization’s assets other than for the organization’s authorized purposes, including but not limited to embezzlement or theft – can seriously call into question a charity’s financial integrity. We check the charity’s last two Forms 990 to see if the charity has reported any diversion of assets. If the charity does report a diversion, then we check to see if it complied with the Form 990 instructions by describing what happened and its corrective action. This metric will be assigned to one of the following categories:
  • There has been no diversion of assets in the previous two years, which is a full credit. In some cases, partial credit is given if a charity has experienced a diversion of assets within two years of filing the Form 990 and has utilized Schedule O to explain: the nature of the diversion, the amount of money or property involved, and the corrective action taken to resolve the situation. Due to this circumstance, we remove 7 points from the charity’s overall Accountability and Transparency score. Unqualified Credit: There has been a diversion of assets during the previous two years, and the charity’s explanation on Schedule O is either absent or inadequate. The charity’s Accountability and Transparency score is reduced by 15 points in this instance.
(Less)
Audited Financials Prepared by Independent Accountant.(More)Audited financial statements provide important information about financial accountability and accuracy. They should be prepared by an independent accountant with oversight from an audit committee. (It is not necessary that the audit committee be a separate committee. Often at smaller charities, it falls within the responsibilities of the finance committee or the executive committee.) The committee provides an important oversight layer between the management of the organization, which is responsible for the financial information reported, and the independent accountant, who reviews the financials and issues an opinion based on its findings. We check the charity’s Form 990 reporting to see if it meets this criteria.
  • The audited financial statements of the charity were prepared by an independent accountant under the supervision of an audit oversight committee. Partially attributable to the fact that the charity’s audited financial statements were prepared by an independent accountant, but that the organization did not have an audit oversight committee Due to this circumstance, we remove 7 points from the charity’s overall Accountability and Transparency score. No Credit: The charity did not have its audited financial statements made by an independent accountant, which would have given it credit. The charity’s Accountability and Transparency score is reduced by 15 points in this instance.

Policies

Charity Navigator examines the Form 990, as well as certain metrics on the charity’s website, to determine whether or not the organization has put these rules in place. Among the sources are the IRS Form 990 and the organization’s website.

Policies:

Donor Privacy.(More)Donors can be reluctant to contribute to a charity when their name, address, or other basic information may become part of donor lists that are exchanged or sold, resulting in an influx of charitable solicitations from other organizations. Our analysts check the charity’s website to see if the organization has a donor privacy policy in place and what it does and does not cover. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:
  • In fact, this charity has a written donor privacy policy, which is available on its website, and which states unequivocally that (1) it will not share or sell a donor’s personal information with anyone else, nor will it send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations, and (2) it will only share or sell personal information if the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so. Opt-out: The organization has a documented privacy policy, which is available on its website, that allows contributors to request that their names and contact information be removed from any lists that the charity shares or sells on their behalf. The process by which a contributor can request to be removed from a list varies from organization to charity, but all opt-out policies require donors to take certain steps to secure their personal information. No: This charity either does not have a documented donor privacy policy in place to protect the personal information of its contributions, or the policy that is in place does not fulfill our requirements.
The privacy policy must be specific to donor information. A general website policy which references “visitor” or “user” personal information will not suffice. A policy that refers to donor information collected on the website is also not sufficient as the policy must be comprehensive and applicable to both online and offline donors. The existence of a privacy policy of any type does not prohibit the charity itself from contacting the donor for informational, educational, or solicitation purposes.(Less)

Transparency

Charity Navigator examines the Form 990, as well as certain metrics on the charity’s website, to determine if the organization makes this information readily available to the public. Among the sources are the IRS Form 990 and the organization’s website.
