SAINt JHN – The Vogue

The words of SAINt JHN: “I don’t need someone to create a biography for me. This is a blunder. My true name is SAINt JHN; however, it is spelt a bit differently than it appears here. In spite of the fact that I was born and raised in Brooklyn, I spent half of my childhood in Georgetown, Guyana. The only difference between my life in Brooklyn and Guyana was that I was dirt poor in Brooklyn and some sort of affluent in Guyana, because apparently two nickels will get you a sports vehicle in a third world nation.

  1. My parents raised myself and my siblings in a strict Christian environment, where my mother insisted that we attend every church possible, EVERY, SINGLE, WEEK!
  2. I’m still not going to church, and I never will be.
  3. Growing up, Jay Z and Beenie Man were two of my favorite musicians.
  4. It doesn’t really matter to me either way.
  5. The fact that I got my start creating music for other people is a stroke of luck; I’m not sure how it occurred, but it did.
  6. I was experiencing some success, but I eventually gave up because who wants to live their aspirations through the eyes of someone else?
  7. I hope you enjoy whatever happens next because I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen next.” Since then, SAINt JHN has published his second studio album, “Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs,” which is available on iTunes.

“This is a hustler’s story”: how SAINt JHN got a grip on his…

Success, according to SAINt JHN, smells like roses. It was in 2015 when the Guyanese-American musician initially wrote the enormous breakout hit, which was originally intended as a pitch to Beyoncé. His decision to half-sing/half-rap tunes in his own distinctive smokey tone came about after she rejected. Roses, which was released in July 2016 and garnered a passionate following in Russia and the former Soviet countries, proved to be a slow-burning triumph. The song was remixed last year by Imanbek Zeikenov, a 19-year-old railway station worker from Kazakhstan who worked on it with a deep, catchy bassline and a new club-ready beat before releasing it back into the public.

  • It was the most Shazamed song in the United Kingdom this year, with the Imanbek remix spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 list in March.
  • Roses has amassed over 796 million Spotify listens worldwide and has proven extremely famous on TikTok, where video snippets of the song have been seen more than five billion times since its release.
  • The former songwriter-for-hire is reflecting on how far he’s gone since his days of selling his musical ideas to the likes of Usher and Hoodie Allen, among other artists.
  • It compelled me to create things that were impossible to deny.
  • That was the point at which I was prepared to place a wager on myself.” It had always been his ambition to establish himself as a successful artist in his own right.
  • John on August 26, 1986, in Brooklyn, New York.
  • If you look hard enough on the internet, you’ll discover sites claiming that his mother is the actress Sharon Rosita, who was on the scouser soap opera Brookside in the mid-80s, and that he was born to her.
  • “My mother was no television actress!” exclaims SAINt JHN, attempting to set the record straight.

“A special shout-out to Barbara!” SAINt JHN’s musical education consisted of a combination of New York rappers such as Jay Z and Jadakiss, as well as Jamaican dancehall musicians that dominate the music industry in Guyana, such as Beenie Man, Spragga Benz, and Buju Banton, who all had a role in his development.

  1. Despite the passage of time, he vividly recalls the life-altering moment he witnessed his elder brother encircled by a group of children at a corner on Furman Avenue in Bushwick.
  2. “I was completely sucked in,” recalls SAINt JHN.
  3. ” SAINt JHN’s initial love may have been battle rapping, but he quickly discovered that he had a natural aptitude for producing catchy, melodic songs.
  4. It wasn’t until later that he realized the albums he grew up listening to in Guyana sounded a little different from the records he grew up listening to in America.
  5. He didn’t realize it at the time, but it would be a chorus that would play a role in his life.
  6. After releasing an EP under his birth name in 2010, SAINt JHN’s contributions to Azeem’s trackHurricanes + Tornados caught the attention of music executive Zach Katz at BMG.
  7. ‘Let’s be quite clear about that tale, I flew myself over there,’ he says emphatically.

“This is a young person attempting to make things happen.” SAINt JHN was guided away from performance and into songwriting at the discussion by Katz, who was there.

” Zach responded, ‘All okay, that’s cool.

That is the question.

The chance presented itself to me because I was egoless enough to seize it.” He viewed myself as a lyricist; I saw myself as an artist.

“At the time, the tunes were simply not good enough,” he acknowledges.

It influenced my development as an artist.” He returned to New York, but he refused to allow himself to get disillusioned.

He released his debut albumCollection One in March 2018 after releasing early singles1999 and the original version ofRoses.

On January 25, 2019 he released his second studio album, Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs, and toured the world numerous times.

After being unable to perform onstage in Oslo and Copenhagen in February 2020, he decided to postpone the rest of his European tour until later in the year.

” My breathing was messed up, and I started experiencing other symptoms that I couldn’t exactly put my finger on because it was my first time.” I didn’t want to put myself in danger or jeopardize my emotional and physical well-being, so I made the difficult decision to cancel the tour.

“I believe my body was just saying, ‘Take a deep breath and relax for a second.'” He waits for a bit before breaking into laughter.

However, despite his triumphal attitude, he does not have time to stop and smell the flowers, which is odd given his schedule.

“In Norway, where people are forced to stay indoors for a significant portion of the year due to frigid conditions, this has an affect on the way they compose melody and make music,” he explains.

It’s all connected in some way.

As a result of all of this, we are extremely sensitive as individuals.

I believe that it is our responsibility as artists to convey what is going on. Every artist has his or her unique set of filters. The Brita is a character created by each artist in their unique way. You make your purchase based on the integrity of the material you desire.”

SAINt JHN

SAINT JHN is a rising rapper that approaches his rhymes with an elegant and energetic manner that distinguishes him from the rest of the pack. A cinematic presence and beautiful hooks are added to the voice of this Brooklyn-based rapper, who is garnering attention for a particular style that he has developed. Carlos St. John was born in Brooklyn, the son of a preacher, and the youngest of nine siblings, all of whom grew up bouncing back and forth between America and Guyana every few years as a result of his father’s ministry.

SAINt JHN describes his poor beginnings as “a barefoot, shirtless boy swimming in the rain and getting water from the well up the road.” At first look, his upbringing appears to be an exotic narrative replete with travel and culture, but in reality, it was a crime-ridden saga immersed in destitution and hardship.

  • As for the man who tried his hand at drug trafficking, he quickly realized that the risks were much outweighed by the benefits he stood to reap from doing so.
  • His ten-year journey to pursue a musical profession with great precision began at this point, and has continued to this day.
  • SAINt JHN began rapping at the age of 12 in order to emulate his brother’s ambitions, however he confesses that he plagiarized parts of his brother’s lines in order to impress his junior high school peers.
  • They were all ‘wooo!’ about it.
  • SAINt JHN began honing his rapping skills upon his permanent return to the United States, channeling that energy into his first two mixtapes, The St.
  • Your rapping is just incredible.
  • Make some music and sing it.
  • He gained writing credits for artists like as Usher, Kiesza and Joey Bada$$ but also losing his own unique voice in the process, as reported by the New York Times.
  • Because their tones didn’t exactly match mine, the songs didn’t quite convey the same enchanted feeling I had.
  • In 2016, he gave fans a taste of what was to come when he uploaded the moody music “1999” toSoundCloud, having no further plans in mind but on release the track.

In a short period of time, the song acquired popularity, and SAINt JHN’s image became clearer, as well as his repertoire expanding rapidly. First Avenue is a street in New York City. First Avenue is a street in New York City.

How Rapper Saint JHN Learned To Appreciate His Own Gifts

Ryan Plett is a writer and director. Saint JHN is unwavering in his commitment to progress. He’s a self-assured MC with a natural ear for melody. Although JHN was born and raised in Brooklyn, where he grew up listening to much of Caribbean music, it was his elder brother who got him interested in hip-hop when he saw him rhyme around the neighborhood. When he first started out in the music industry, he went by his given name, Carlos Saint John, which he also used for a brief period of time while pausing his rapping to focus on creating songs for other artists.

  • He worked hard and his abilities earned him co-writing honors on songs such as ” Crash ” and “Rivals,” which were released by Usher in 2016.
  • Writing music for other people allowed me to be the person in the room,” JHN explained to the FADER.
  • Later this year, he reintroduced himself with the song and video ” 1999,” and tonight on The FADER, he unveils the eerie video for his second single, “Roses,” which was released earlier this year.
  • “The first time I saw it, I turned the volume down to mute.

‘Roses alone’ seemed like a song that could be used to score the entire film, and so that’s exactly what I did.” JHN stopped by the FADER office in September, and we talked about the influence of his childhood, how he came to decide to become a composer, and how he characterizes his own sound now.

What would you use to describe your sound at that time period?

The reason why I began rapping was because I had so many things I wanted to express.

It used to be a lot less musical than it is now.

I might have been enraged at the time, but I’m a little less enraged today.

Melody brought about a sea shift.

When I was in the hood, I was totally enraged because I was just wanting to get out of the neighborhood.

In the meantime, I’m attempting to find out how to stop eating Ramen noodles for lunch.

What I’m going to write about today is a little more reflective of my most recent experiences, such as falling in love for the first time and adjusting to life as a grownup.

It has a more emotional component to it.

It wasn’t long ago that you were creating songs for other musicians before launching your own career as Saint JHN.

I was hurrying and bustling.

“How am I supposed to flip this?” I wondered.

As opposed to someone in need of assistance, I prefer situations when I can be of assistance.

Zach happened to come upon a song I created for a buddy of mine on the internet.

In his words, “I’m going to ask you a really important question.” Is it more important for you to rap or earn one million dollars?” “I’d want to make a million bucks,” I thought to myself.

“How does this happen?” you might wonder.

It wasn’t merely a piece of fiction or an abstract concept.

“Put these tunes together,” he instructed.

I was unable to secure any Rihanna recordings.

I was only in Los Angeles for a total of two months.

The fact that I had a W, however a tiny one, was something that was more validating—I had accomplished something—helped to open my door a little farther.

It was a difficult task.

In the midst of it all, that gets forgotten somewhere along the line.

You begin to take on the role of an instrument.

No, I’m not making up any of these concepts; they’re all taken from someplace else.

Then I’m giving it to someone else.

It became more difficult since I believed I was the more qualified person to carry out the concepts.

As a result, I would hand them off to someone who would then hand them over to the artist.

“This sounds very much like you.” That phrase made me feel discouraged for the first 40 times I heard it because it made me feel like I was boxing myself in.

In your song “Dope Dealer,” tell us about your experience.

Yeah.

That was very typical for me.

I gave it a go, but I didn’t care for it at all.

My teeth are too straight, and the texture of my skin is far too smooth.

Your selections are limited to what you have been exposed to.

For me, gang banging and drug peddling were just part of everyday life.

My brothers grew up and went into the drug business with their father.

That might have easily been the start of a narrative.

No, I was aware of it.

Because he was just two years older than me, he was the only option I had.

He was a fisherman, and I would’ve become a fisherman if he hadn’t been.

I would have followed him into whatever dark hole he was leading me down had I been able.

I’m pretty excellent at making commitments, so I made this one before I realized I had any other alternatives.

Like, who knows what’s going to happen?

After releasing your own music, how would you characterize the sound of your own music?

Not because I’m creating some sort of experimental martian music, but rather because it’s a little more general in nature.

No, I don’t want to provide you with the option to find a box to put me in; you can figure it out afterwards.

GDD COMPLEXx is a component of it; it is my collective, it is my squad.

He brings the vibes, it’s Mr.

Kyle the Hooligan King, Lanta, and I, Saint Jhn, are all members of the gang.

I’m able to provide you with that sound.

In its most recent incarnation, this is what rap music sounds like.

As a single artist, you’ve come full circle in your professional life.

I believe that I am entitled to be present in any room in which I am present.

My talent, I believe, and my skill set, I believe, speak for itself.

Having out of body experiences continues to be a part of my life.

I’m going to be like, “Yo buddy, do you know who you are?” if you put me in a room with someone else. Do you have any idea? I’m aware of the situation. “I grew up listening to you,” my mother says. But, no matter where I go, I feel as though I belong.
