The Student Assistance Program (SAP) team is made up of the Principal, trained teachers, an AIU support teacher, school counselor, and a representative from Chartiers Valley Mental Health and Retardation Center. The meetings are scheduled twice a month after school.
The classroom teacher submits names of students who are experiencing difficulty in the classroom to the SAP Team. Before submitting a student’s name to the SAP Team, the teacher is required to speak with parents concerning the student’s difficulty. The SAP Team Core Leader then contacts the parent and acquires written permission to continue the SAP process. Once written permission is received, the SAP Team meets to discuss a plan of action for the student. All information is collected and a plan is discussed with the parents, student, homeroom teacher, and the SAP Team.
The Special Needs Program takes over when the SAP Team concludes that a psychologist should evaluate a student to determine exactly what adjustments need to be made for the student. The parents are met with, and must agree to the testing. The school district in which the student resides does the formal testing. When the testing is complete, the parents, SAP Team and school counselor meet to discuss the results. At this meeting, it is determined whether the student meets special needs criteria. If the student does not fall under a special needs program, the SAP Team meets with the student’s teachers to develop a plan for success. If a student requires special needs assistance, they are placed into our Special Needs Program.
