Social Studies
The main objective of the Social Studies program is to enable the students to learn about the past in order to understand the present and prepare for the future. In our program we look at all aspects of Social Studies. Our Social Studies program includes all of history from the earliest appearance of man and their cultures to our own personal United States History up to World War II. The goals for this program are as follows:
- To develop critical thinking skills through effective decision making techniques and problem solving opportunities while emphasizing Catholic values.
- To develop an appreciation, awareness and respect for different cultures and religions.
- To develop an understanding that by studying the past, we can see the effect of decisions by various people and how they affect our lives today.
- To develop an awareness of the inhuman injustices including discrimination, prejudice, genocide, and the impact it has had on various ethnic groups.
- To understand that all societies develop economic systems in order to make the best possible use of their limited resources.
- To appreciate how the ancient civilizations provided the beginnings of advanced modern civilizations.
- To develop an understanding that there are different kinds of governments in different nations, and the people of each nation must know their responsibility to the governmental pattern under which the live.
- To understand that individuals and nations throughout the world are interdependent upon each other.
- Understanding and acceptance of cultures and cultural change can assure World peace.
- To be able to use research skills to support the need for the application of values in society.
- To develop the skills necessary to understand Social Studies concepts (different types of maps, globes, time lines, tables, charts, diagrams, research).
- Understanding of community and community helpers.
- Appreciate importance of family and friends.
