The Science program at St. Margaret of Scotland School provides all students with knowledge based inquiry skills education, and the use of “hands-on” applied science opportunities school-wide. Students learn by “doing” and “experimenting.” The application of the Scientific Method as criteria for all middle school students is a mandatory part of the St. Margaret of Scotland Middle School Science Curriculum.

Students from K-5 use a “general” based science program, while students from grades 6-8 experience a more concentrated and specialized scientific approach to the study. A year of Earth Science is provided for all grade six students, where students explore the areas of weather, rock and gem studies, oceanography, and plate tectonic behavior. Grade seven students experience a year of Life Science with provided opportunities for microscopic and dissection study of organisms. Grade eight students spend the year in a Physical Science Program.
A fall Space Camp week is provided annually for students to experience the constructing and flying of a rocket, and learning the principles of flight and space travel. The week of “hands-on” activities culminates with a field trip to the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University where students participate in a simulated space mission. Our science curriculum follows the standards set by the Diocese of Pittsburgh as well as those set by the State of Pennsylvania. Our science program strives to prepare our students with sound inquiry and critical thinking skills for the challenges of high school and higher learning.
