Language Arts
The goal of the integrated Language Arts program is to introduce language as an effective means of communication. Students learn that good communication skills are vital for effective expression of ideas in everyday life.
Specific program goals are:
- Students develop their listening skills through read aloud selections using strategies on how to listen for a specific purpose.
- Through the literature-based program, the students are encouraged to think critically and logically. Higher-level thinking skills are developed, such as using inference, drawing conclusions, and characterization.
- Students learn different reading strategies, depending on their purpose. They develop the ability to see the difference between reading for pleasure and reading for information.
- The students develop a life-long appreciation for good literature. This appreciation influences the student's personal choice of reading material.
- The students develop the ability to use written language skills
effectively, including grammar and mechanics, by responding to the literature in the program.
- The students also respond to literature in enjoyable ways such as speaking, dramatic performance, and visual arts.
- Students develop and apply literary analysis skills that will enable them to be critical readers throughout their lives.
- Students have opportunities to demonstrate their writing, speaking, and analysis skills through diocesan, local, and national contests and extra-curricular activities.
- Students apply their language skills across the curriculum.
- The use of technology is integrated in the Language Arts Program.
- The students learn techniques that enable them to acquire, to extract, and to share information.
